iPhone Tips | Ring Tones

By Candis Reade

It does not seem long ago that we were getting cell phones and getting excited because we could change the ring tones from one single beep to three long beeps. At the time this was thought to be really hi-tech and we were all very impressed. Long gone are those days. Now it is possible to get nearly any song or sound that you want as a ring tone. Not that the phones are even the same now we are talking about iPhones and iPhone ring tones.

The iPhone made its first appearance in January 2007 and has become increasingly popular. It is a lovely piece of technology with no buttons, just a touch sensitive screen. It is capable of giving you huge amounts of information within a moment and incorporates camera, MP3 player, visual voicemail and a host of technologically wonderful gadgets. Such a gadget can be incredibly useful for work and great for keeping in touch with your friends, listening to music and giving access to the internet. It would not be right if it just beeped when you had a call or SMS coming through, would it. Therefore, iPhone ring tones are an important part of life!

As such an important part of our technology filled lives, it is also only fitting that you are now able to get access to more than half a million ringtones on individual websites. This is an inconceivable number of sounds and songs ready just to be downloaded onto your phone. Many of these ringtones will be free, however some companies do make charges so be careful. Just narrowing down the selection of iPhone ring tones to the ones that you are interested in is quite time consuming, let alone making the definitive decision as to which one you want to hear when someone calls you!

There are many companies that specialise in iPhone ring tones and these are nearly all internet based. One thing that you must be a little careful about is that you do not get hounded by the company after subscribing without realising. Sometimes you can subscribe freely and then find that you are constantly getting messages advertising their services and goods. If you then try to stop these messages you may find that you incur a cancellation charge. Sometimes these are very hefty and there have been many cases of complaint against such companies. Always read the small print prior to giving any of your details on the internet.

Once you are sure that you are dealing with a reputable company, you can select your iPhone ring tones. These ring tones can be changed on a regular basis so that you can always have your favorite song or sounds. The quality of the music on these great little units is very high and you will be amazed at the tones available. Hopefully, however, you will not get carried away listening to the ring tone and not actually answer your phone!

How to share an MP3 directory with Microsoft Zune and Apple iPod / iTunes on Mac

When buying a Zune one of the first things I wanted to do was use the same MP3 directory we’re using with my wife’s Mac. We have a pretty extensive CD collection that we have partially ripped to MP3 and store on an external Hard Drive (250GB) attached via USB to one of the Windows XP machines on our home network in a FAT32 partition we call WINMAC.

In this partition, we store all our MP3 and album artwork and inside iTunes on our Apple Mac we have the iTunes preferences set to use this as the primary directory, see:

iTUNES -> PREFERENCES -> General -> “iTunes Music Folder location.”

How to share an MP3 directory with Microsoft Zune and Apple iPod / iTunes on Mac

We also changed the “importing” section, particularly “Import Using” to MP3 Encoder and the “Setting” to ‘Higher Quality’ as shown below:

itune import mp3

Setting the sync directory on the Zune was equally straightforward:

  1. In the Zune player click on the up down circular arrow to make the inline sync window visible.

  2. Click on “Sync Options”

  3. Choose “more options” and the Options box will appear shown below.

    itune mp3 sync

  4. In “Rip music to this location” section (#1) is where you change to the same sync directory as iTunes is using.

  5. In the “Rip Settings” section (#2) change the format to MP3. You can drag the slider for the quality. I like using the highest quality which also results in a larger file size.

How to make your iPhone Battery Last Longer

By Neal Adam Hamou

The battery life of an iPhone 3G is nothing short of embarrassing. The secret is out and it is almost funny how blatantly Apple showed lack of care for this feature. They don't even provide the option of having a spare battery! So you could say that's two slaps in the face. But Apple has given advice on how to preserve your battery life. They are all pretty much common sense, but some provide to be useful. Most tips simply instruct you to turn off anything and everything that you're not using at the moment.

We know there must be thousands more tiny helpful hints as to how to save your iPhone battery's life but we sifted through hundreds and narrowed it down to only the most effective. And without further ado, here are those helpful hints to saving your battery life:

  • Adjust brightness to lower dim level
  • Minimize use of third-party applications like games that prevent the screen from dimming and applications that use location services.
  • Fetch your email less frequently. I found this made a rather noticeable difference on my original iPhone. (You can change your e-mail settings to poll by the hour)
  • Turn off 3G, location services, push email, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth when you're not using them

  • Turn off equalizer when listening to your song play lists
  • Lock your phone when you're not using it so that you don't keep accidentally turning on the screen. (Just press the sleep/wake button at the top of the phone)

The most curious tip I've seen is to make sure you keep the electrons in the battery moving occasionally. This means you should go through at least one charge cycle each month where you run it down all the way dead. Everyone has heard the rumor that you should keep it charged to the max, but apparently, this is good for it! A short battery life has been one of the most popular iPhone complaints that users have. I hope users find these battery saving tips useful. Thank you for taking the time to read these hints.
